Blueberry varieties

Bluecrop
We have three varieties of blueberries at the Berry Barn.

Bluecrop, our earliest berries, is my favorite. They are a large berry, full of flavor. Last year the Bluecrop branches were so loaded with berries they nearly touched the ground.  This year they appear to be taking a rest. This spring they didn't set many berries. Thus, it's been slim pickings so far this season.

Our second variety, Jersey, is just starting to ripen. Our Jersey bushes usually produce tiny berries. We describe the berry as having a traditional taste. It's better than saying they taste like sweet mush. Besides, many of our elderly customers prefer the Jerseys, which remind them of picking wild huckleberries in their childhood.

Elliott is our late season berry, which often produces into September. They're a medium size berry with a sweet, yet tangy taste. The Elliotts are ideal for freezing, because they retain their shape even when the berries begin to thaw. Though the Bluecrop berries were scarce this year, it appears we will have a good crop of Elliotts and I am checking them every couple of days to watch them turn from green to white to pink to blue.

  1. God has put so much beauty in His creation! How wonderful that we can enjoy a 4-color show just in the ripening of fruit. Thanks for a great lesson on berry types, too.
