Christmas walk

Last night our church participated in the 25th annual Dow Gardens Christmas Walk. Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights hundreds of visitors stroll candle lit walks and pause to listen to carolers and musicians perform throughout the gardens. Our group sang traditional Christmas carols, including "Joy to the World" and "Silent Night," on the porch of the Dow house midway through the gardens. It was a beautiful evening, and after we were done with our caroling, we were able to enjoy the lights and sounds of the gardens ourselves while another group took our place on the steps.

Abstract snow

When the first snowflakes appear in the air, I am ready to grab my camera. As the snow continues for days and weeks and months, the novelty wears off and I'm not always so willing to don on jackets and boots and trudge out in the snow for another picture of the frosted pine tree. I just scrolled through last year's winter photos--in December I saved one hundred snow photos, in January forty-eight, in February nineteen, in March three. It's not that we had twice as much snow in December as in January. But there's only so much snow that one wants to photograph.

It's only December, and I'm not tired of snow pictures yet. But I did want to find a subject beyond the frosted pine tree. Thus the abstract shots.

Friendship flowers

As a token of their friendship, Pastor and Sister Potteiger presented each of us with a flower yesterday morning. Brother Potteiger carried the vase of white, red and dark red carnations and his wife followed with a stack of paper towels. December completes the third year of the Potteigers' ministry in Michigan.
